When it comes to books that transform our understanding of health and healing, few compare to Dr Bernie S. Siegel's "Love, Medicine & Miracles." This groundbreaking work, first published in 1986, explores the profound connection between emotional well-being and physical health. Siegel, a paediatric surgeon, and pioneer in holistic medicine, provides compelling insights into how love and positive thinking can influence the healing process.

During the editing phase of my own book project "Trust Your Doctor", I embarked on a journey of reading books written by doctors as they are uniquely different then those written by patients. This experience has been eye-opening and has absolutely helped to broaden my understanding of the difficulties faced by medical professionals in dealing with unique patient traits, personality traits and social factors.

From the very first chapter of this book, Dr Siegel describes:

"Surgeons aren't perfect. We always do our best, but complications still occur. Although disheartening, they keep us grounded and prevent us from starting to think of ourselves as gods. The one case that most shook my faith in myself was an injury to a facial nerve in a young girl I operated on early in my career. Seeing her wake up with half her face paralyzed made me want to hide forever. To become a surgeon in order to help people and then to end up disfiguring someone was a shattering experience. Unfortunately, I hadn't yet learned that my typical physician's response--to hide my pain when something went wrong--helped no one."

Reading this, I felt a sense of release as my own feelings of resentment towards a certain former neurosurgeon finally gained a new aura.

The Healing Power of Love

At the heart of Siegel’s book is the assertion that love is a powerful force for healing. He argues that love can positively impact patients' recovery, not just in an emotional sense but in measurable physical ways. Siegel draws from his extensive experience with cancer patients, offering numerous anecdotes where the power of love and emotional support has led to remarkable recoveries. The concept isn’t just about romantic love but extends to self-love, love from family, friends, and even caregivers.

The Mind-Body Connection

"Love, Medicine & Miracles" delves deep into the mind-body connection, a concept that was relatively novel when Siegel first wrote about it. He emphasizes that our thoughts and emotions can significantly influence our physical health. Siegel discusses how positive thinking, visualization, and mental imagery can enhance the body's natural healing processes. His patients who practiced these techniques often saw better outcomes than those who did not.

Stories of Survival

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is the stories of survival that Siegel shares. These are not just tales of medical miracles but are testimonies to the resilience of the human spirit. Patients who were given grim prognoses defied the odds, not merely through medical treatment but through changing their attitudes and embracing a more positive outlook on life. These stories serve as a powerful reminder of the human capacity for healing when the mind and heart are engaged.

The Role of the Doctor

Siegel also explores the role of doctors and how their approach to patient care can influence outcomes. He advocates for a more compassionate, patient-centered approach to medicine. According to Siegel, doctors should go beyond treating the disease and consider the patient's emotional and spiritual needs. This holistic approach can create a more supportive environment that promotes healing.

Practical Advice

While Siegel’s book is rich with philosophical insights and emotional narratives, it also provides practical advice for patients and caregivers. Techniques such as meditation, visualization, and fostering a supportive community are discussed in detail. These strategies empower patients to take an active role in their healing journey, rather than feeling like passive recipients of medical care.

Legacy and Impact

"Love, Medicine & Miracles" has had a lasting impact on the field of medicine and patient care. It helped to pave the way for the integration of holistic approaches in conventional medicine. Siegel’s work encouraged medical professionals to consider the psychological and emotional aspects of healing, which has become increasingly accepted in modern healthcare.

In conclusion, this book is more than just a book about medicine. It’s a testament to the power of love, the resilience of the human spirit, and the profound impact of a positive mindset on healing. For anyone dealing with illness or supporting a loved one through their health journey, this book offers hope, inspiration, and practical tools to navigate the challenges of disease and recovery. Through its pages, Siegel's wisdom continues to guide and inspire, reminding us that love truly is a powerful medicine.

My Take-Aways

  1. Do not hold on to negative feelings, resentments or hate whether contiously or subcontiously

  2. Be authentic and express yourself; words are a tricky medium of communication and one sometimes falls short on finding the right words but it is critically important to express as opposed to repress. Bring the unconscious and the subconscious to the forefront and deal with it. Being open and releasing emotions at the time when they occur can be medicinal

  3. Engage in self-love. You cannot give from an empty cup

  4. Believe in miracles and in your own ability to heal. A good mechanic (doctor) can set you up on your success journey but the patient also must do the work to thrive as well as to continue the progress

  5. Being a people-pleaser often leaves you running on an empty fuel tank

  6. Family support in a healing journey is invaluable
